I lived in Hull and on the first night of the war, the sirens just sounded like ships' buzzers to me so I didn't think anything of it. But everyone else went out into the street to see what was happening.
Then the daylight raids began and I remember helping dad to make extra shutters for the shelter.
When we heard the sirens, we'd wait for a gap, wait for a quiet bit, then run like mad for the shelter. Other times we went under the stairs or under our oak table. The gas mains was under the stairs so I suppose it wasn't the best place to go really.
A bomb was dropped just two streets away from us. Luckily we were in our brick shelter at the time. When we went to go back to our home we found the front windows had been blown in.
I was never really frightened, I think we were just very fortunate.
