Fire warden's map of New Milton, Oct 1942, ref 30M99/1. Not to be reproduced without written permission of Hampshire Record Office
Among the many wartime records at Hampshire Record Office in Winchester are examples of the preparations made to defend individual communities against air raids.
This hand-drawn coloured map of the centre of New Milton, near the south-west Hampshire coast, was drawn by fire warden Eric Gadd in October 1942. It indicates the locations of public shelters, stirrup pumps, static water supply and wardens' posts.
The map also gives the names of shops and ordinary houses, thus making it in some ways more comprehensive than even large-scale Ordnance Survey maps.
