Hampshire Record Office in Winchester provides the archive service for the county of Hampshire (excluding, for most purposes, the cities of Portsmouth and Southampton which have separate archive services).

Hampshire Record Office collects and preserves records of Hampshire organisations, families and individuals, ranging from official archives of local councils, churches and schools to personal diaries and letters.

Our holdings include many documents which give an insight into the effects of the Second World War on life in Hampshire. These include:
Records of local councils, relating to air raid protection, food distribution, evacuation, and plans to deal with invasion
Records of many (but not all) Hampshire schools, including log-book entries describing the impact of evacuation and air raids on school life, and registers recording the admission of evacuees
Records of some local Home Guard units
An extensive archive of the Royal Observer Corps
Records of Women's Institutes recording their involvement in Home Front activities such as preserving fruit
Parish magazines giving insights into the impact of the war at the most local level, and sometimes recording the deaths in action of local people
Diaries and letters recording the experiences of individual Hampshire people engaged in war work, or experiencing day-to-day life on the Home Front

The Record Office is located close to Winchester railway station, and is open to all, free of charge. For more details of how to visit the Record Office, or to search our online catalogue, please visit www.hants.gov.uk/record-office

We are always pleased to hear from people who would be interested in placing Hampshire-related documents, including wartime letters, diaries and other documents, in our keeping, either as gifts or as loans.

Our postal address is Hampshire Record Office, Sussex Street, Winchester SO23 8TH, and we can be contacted by telephone on 01962 846154. An email feedback form is available on our website.

Wessex Film and Sound Archive, located within Hampshire Record Office, holds over 12 hours of film footage of Home Guard activities, a Civil Defence exercise and preparations, Blitz damage, evacuees, normal family activities during the war, manufacture of aircraft parts, social events, a wartime wedding, D-Day build-up, school activities, VE Day celebrations, etc. There are also a substantial number of sound recordings, including a Works Wonders factory concert, Farnborough War Weapons Week song, a collection of direct cut gramophone discs made from wartime radio broadcasts, and lots of oral history reminiscences about the Home Front period on tape. There is more information about some of the films on our web page http://www.hants.gov.uk/record-office/film/guide/homefront.html

Information correct at 18 January 2006.
