One night during the war my young daughter and I were sleeping at our neighbours house in Southampton when the siren went off, we all quickly made our way down to the shelter in the garden and my neighbour wrapped her baby in an eiderdown to keep him warm. It was so dark because of the blackout and in the panic my neighbour accidentally dropped the baby, we all had to stop and look for the baby being careful not to step on it, it was very difficult to do this in complete darkness. We found the baby and continued to move quickly to the shelter, when we got down there we found that luckily the baby was absolutely fine. Although it caused panic at the time I always laugh when I think back to this story now, remembering us all searching for this baby in the dark. Having a sense of humour and laughing at these things kept me going during the war.
