I was not quite 18 so couldn't join the R.A.F. until July 1940, so I entered the Merchant Navy on the S.S.St.Denis sailing out of Harwich on April 26th. We were heading for Rotterdam to pick up selected British personnel.
All went well when on May 10th at 4 a.m. I heard some terrible noises above my head so I rushed up on deck and saw that the sky was full of German planes and German paratroopers everywhere. The huge oil storage tanks were already on fire.
For four days we endured the noise until our captain arranged transport for the journey to the Hook of Holland where we boarded the H.M.S.Vivien which took us to Tilbury, two days before my 18th. This was my first and only stint in the M.N.
I have learned that I am the last survivor out of a crew of fifty.
This story was written up and part published in The East Anglian Daily paper.
I have done a Video for 大象传媒 South today for the VE Day commemorations shown early in May.
I hope this proves of interest to your contributors.
