When the air raids were at their worst I was at school in Halesowen in Worcestershire. This particular day we had spent most of the lessons in the air raid shelters. The All Clear finally sounded and we were sent home. I cycled to and from school every day, a matter of 4 miles or so using mainly country lanes. I heard a plane overhead and realised it was an enemy plane. It seemed to have me in its sights and I took cover in the trees while it circled above. It was common knowledge that machine-gunning of civilians did happen and I was only eleven years old and scared!! Eventually he went away and I continued home. My mother was waiting at the gate, very worried, and pointed out the German plane busy shooting at the barrage balloons nearby. It could have been me !!!
