As an 11year old in June 1940 Guernsey
Transcribed at the Berrington Hall Rural Learning Event
I was on Holiday on Guernsey with relatives when war broke out. My mother thought it would be safer to leave me there with my aunt and uncle. For nine months I was very Happy and then the authorities realised the Germans were coming and decided to evacuate the children . So on 21st June 1940, we sailed to Weymouth on the good ship Antwerp from St Peter Port. When we got to Weymouth we were cheered in the streets and we thought it was a victory parade. Later we were put on a train not knowing where we were going . We ended up in Glasgow under the care of the authorities. A few days later I saw a lady and thought 鈥 That looks like my mum鈥 and it was. I had written and told her what had happened but didn鈥檛 expect her to come so quickly. I then returned home to Uxbridge.
