I was going to work one day, I had to go by tram as far as South Wimbledon Tube station and then a short walk. I was working at the time at Wimbledon Technical Collage in the chemistry lab.
I got off the tram and thought how quiet it was, no one about, I crossed the road and started walking, then I looked up and there was this doodlebug, VERY VERY low, coming straight at me. I have never got down on the ground so fast in all my life, it came down and exploded about 2oo yards away, much too close for comfort, between me and my destination. When I got to work, all the bottles of chemicals had been blown off the shelves and all the windows had been blow in, it was a terrible mess, and it had to be made worse by chucking water all over it because there were a lot of concentrated acid bottles broken.
I should explain that the old trams were very noisy and that is why I had not heard the siren and realise that there was a raid on. I was 18 at the time.
I can still hear sirens, doodlebugs and german bombers on old films even when I am not in the room when they are shown.
