My family lived in Birmingham and they made private arrangements for me to be evacuated to Berkshire to live my great uncle, grandmother and great aunt. I was 4 at the time. My parents came to visit every 2-3 weeks travelling by motorbike and side cart. When they came I had to sleep in the bath. The main memory that stayed with me ever since was of hearing the bombers go over and the adults saying 鈥渢hat they weren鈥檛 going to Birmingham tonight鈥, I still feel apprehensive if I hear an old fashioned aeroplane going over. My father was in the home guard and we had a rifle in the house. My mother had learnt it but she always said that she didn鈥檛 think she could pull the trigger, even if a German invader came up the drive.
We had a Morrison shelter, which took up most of the living room, sometimes we had to sleep in it and if the bombing was close an Alsatian dog would come in with us.
