During the war we found our way around in the blackout with the aid of our torches, but unfortunately the batteries for these became in short supply, the most popular being those that used the No.8 battery, which I do not believe is in production now.
Alf Jacobs had a brilliant idea, he managed to procure several HT Batteries the kind used for radio receivers, broke them down and coupled the cells in pairs, he had labels printed "Dimlite Battery" and sold them on his Dad's Fish stall, at first the people were delighted at being able to get their battery replacements again, but some complained they could not see well, so Alf had a unit made up to accommodate an additional cell that screwed on to the torch, this improved the light output, and was well received by the people, easing the situation for some time. Alf had solved a problem and to my mind was a genius.
