I volunteed for the RAF at 19 and trained at Manchester and Blackpool to be a fitter.
At that time Billy Bryant, one of the players for Manchester football team(His wife and my sister were friends) said as long as I was stationed there I could have free tickets every week for the matches.
I remember we sailed on Friday 13th to Egypt. All the sailors said how unlucky that was. They were right. Before we landed the boat caught fire. Then we bumped another ship and took in water. Eventually we landed safely.
I served in Egypt for three and a half years, where I caught Malaria and later dysentery. Then I went to Iraq for six months, making a total of four years.
When I came home I attended a big party in London. They wanted me to stay the night but I felt I needed to go home. When I arrived back at my house my dad was sound asleep in his chair, he had been waiting up for me all night. I tapped him on the shoulder and gave him the surprise of his life.
