It was 1942 and there had been fighting in the skies all night. At 8am we came out of the shelter and looked out. Some of the roof had slid sideways and I remember the checked curtains in the bathroom were blown out and hooked on the tiles. Suddenly we heard the sound of a plane and knew it was not one of ours from Biggin Hill. The plane was hit by ack-ack fire and we could see it coming down towards us. With no time to rush into the shelter we watched it swoop over our house and plough straight through the roof of the house opposite, taking the bath out with it. The pilot was very young and miraculously survived. The elderly couple in the house got him out and he was terrified that they would shoot him but they simply said, 鈥淐ome on son, we鈥檝e got a grandson like you鈥, and they brought him in for a cup of tea.
