On September 3rd 1942 my uncle , Frank Rodgers, from Newry, was a draughtsman by profession but then an RAF pilot officer. This was also interesting as he was a Nationalist.He had his bag packed to return home after completeing his number of sorties. The family , especially my grandmother Alice, was jubliant at the prospect of his homecoming. When she opened the front ddor expecting to see him she instead recieved a telegram. Apparently someone had taken ill and could not go on the Dusseldorf flight. Frank therefore volunteered but was tragically killed. Frank is buried in St Marys cemetery Newry. A quirk of fate. He was only twenty three years old . His son , Brian, was born three months later.
