Postcard sent to parents of Harry Kirk alias Vic Hunter
Sgt Harry Kirk and Vic Hunter were two men both from the north east of England, both in Stalag 8B. Vic Hunter was an engineer and was singled out to go out of the camp on work parties. It was decided by those in the camp organising sabotage and escapes etc that it would be a good idea if Harry Kirk were to change places with Vic Hunter, as they both had similar accents and were aware of each others history they could easily exchange places.
During this time Sgt Kirk sent a postcard home to his parents to let them know he was safe and well but had to sign it Vic Hunter in the hope that they would be able to put two and two together and realise not only himself but Vic Hunter were alive and well.
A copy of this postcard is attached.
Unfortunately when the allies were on the brink of invading at the end of the war, prisoners were marched from Stalag 8B to Poland to be used as forced labour, this march was known as the Lamsdorf March. Vic and Harry were separated and Harry never did know what happend to Vic.
