I am the daughter of Sgt Harry Kirk 106 Sqd RAF
He was shot down over Berlin and taken prisoner of war - eventually ending up in Stalag V111B. I needn't go into his life there - many of you reading this site will be all too familliar with the implications, however, thanks to help from the local library in Newcastle upon Tyne I have been able to post the diary entries which he wrote on that dreaded Lamsdorf Death March. He eventually escaped from it by hiding in a barn and remaining silent for about 48 hours - not easy when you body was riddled with the effects of malnutrition etc. However, he was rescued by American troups and repatriated (dressed as a Yank I think!!) and went on to become a successfull hotelier in Keswick. Sadly he died in 1996 - before all this WW2 peoples war web site was available, however, if he can 'look down' and see what is now being done for all those like him I am sure he would feel very humble - they must never be forgotten for what the have done for us.
I hope some of the diary entries may ring bells with other reader's families - I know Dad was not the only one in the barn.
