ALLEN WEATHERLEY

The doodlebugs they looked as if they were coming up the river. I was stationed at Woolwich. It鈥檚 alright while they were going. As soon as the engine cut out you knew it would explode. We had steel helmets.

When the Japanese captured Sumatra we then had to go back and retake it and one of the things was when they dropped the atom bomb. It was either them or us. It was all over. The Japanese were on the dockyard with cups of tea for us. We didn鈥檛 want their cups of tea. When they had surrendered and we鈥檇 taken over their vehicles the general had a pennant mast on the staff car, they had to stand to attention and salute but the lorry was still moving so they all tumbled over. We were laughing and the General called out 鈥渢here鈥檚 a war still on鈥.
