9 THE BLACK-OUT
To get to my paternal grandparents鈥 house we had to travel by bus and when we would return home at night after 鈥渢ea鈥, the bus would be lit up inside but the windows were all covered with black blinds. This was because of the 鈥渂lack out鈥. How the driver knew when to stop to let his passengers off is a mystery to me, but I suppose there was some kind of occasional street lighting. During those war years every house had to be 鈥渂lacked out鈥 and my father used to make my brother and me play a game, 鈥済oing to bed in the dark鈥, in which we had to go upstairs to our rooms without any light on at all. It was a bit scary if my brother went first and grasped my arm, shouting 鈥淏oo鈥 at me as I passed the bathroom it was one of my father鈥檚 duties as an air raid warden to ensure that not the merest chink of light escaped through anybody鈥檚 window.
