In the early years of the War I was employed as a shop assistant by Hunters,a firm of grocers on Much Wenlock's High Street.
We suppled groceries over a wide area which I used to cycle round during the week to collect orders. These orders came from the surrounding villages i.e. Easthope, Broseley, Jackfield, Ironbridge, Madeley etc.
On Fridays we made up the orders in the shop, then on Saturdays we made deliveries in a hired van. I remember that one of our customers was Billy Wright's grandmother who lived in Ironbridge, also his mother who lived there.
One Saturday morning we were in Ironbridge on our delivery round when a German Bomber flew over quite low, it came up the River Severn. It was a very big plane with swastika markings. It rose high over to the left and dropped a bomb on the Tickwood woods behind Ironbridge Power Station.
