Me and another soldier in 1946
We arrived in France before Christmas 1939 we ended up in a small village called Monshy-breton. We saw action more or less straight away, we were on a bit of a rise, the road was below and we could see the Germans about 200 yards away and we were lying together with our tin hats just above, we were keeping tabs on their movements, I said something to Stan Eyre, a colleague who was with me but he never answered, I looked over to him and his face had been blown away by gunshot. This was the first man I had seen killed. I was stunned and shocked. I slid down the bank back to my unit and told the sergeant and he arranged to sort it out.
On one other occasion, I was a chauffer for an officer, Captain Hart I drove him in an Austin pickup with a canvas back. I was concentrating on driving because of the danger we were in, he had spoken to me and when I replied back to him he never answered, I turned around to look at him and saw that he had been shot in the head. I took his tags of his neck a green and orange one. One was for the regiment and one for religion. I got straight out of the van and ran back up the road. I met another lorry coming and told them what had happened to us, a small pickup behind took me back to the camp and the lorry went on to attend to Captain Hart.
