Although I was only three when the war started, I later heard about the following drama. The sirens went, so my mother collected blankets etc. and wrapped me in an eiderdown as usual, before running down to the air raid shelter. Once there, she began sorting everything out - only to find that I was no longer in the eiderdown! In the rush, they had dropped me, but couldn't go back up until the 'all clear' sounded. My parents then went up expecting the worst, and were very relieved to find me safe - in the cabbage patch!
