Friday 27th April 1945
Dear Mam and Nancy
Just received your letter dated Mon 23rd April. Very glad to know that you all at home are in the best of health.
Don't worry too much about me not writing so often (as I'll look after myself OK) but as soon as I can drop a few lines to everybody I get them away.
Yes, I remember Mrs Thomas, Temple Street allright, she seems by your letter that she's got plenty to worry about, hope she gets some good news very soon.
I haven't had the "Star" yet with the piece about Ray Williams, but its good news all the same, as he's had quite a time as a PoW - he was captured in Germany wasn't he. Quite right about the way they treat our PoWs (hope that Len is allright with them, he should be as he's only been with them a short time)!!!
On our push inside we have liberated thousands of slave workers, PoW who when they see us jump for joy, (believe me its a grand feeling to be able to see a smile on these mens faces).
Have just written a reply to Graham's letter he's still keeping in the best, as for Ed haven't heard a word from him yet (wait till I get hold of him).
Hope that Gwen and Freddie have had a good holiday (and rest) at Cardiff. They seem to be bringing up the old subject all the time to Gwen - hope that this will be the last for her this time.
Don't know whether Winnie had had Colin's hair cut yet but think Roy had had his done allright.
Weel I've still gor the pen for Ken will try and get it away with one of the lads who's going home on leave in the first week in May (he lives in Carmarthen), it should OK, it's 14 kt gold. See that Ken is practicing the piano (under pressure) very well, hope that he sticks it out allright - also as you say that Jean will have a "real do" at it without shouting. Glad to know that the gardens going allright.
The news is good don't you think (link-up of the Russians - hope we will meet them soon too)!
Glad to hear that Will's got a few vacant dates for "V-Day". Don't think the way the leave is going that I'll be home much before July-Aug. (Hope the Wars over long before then)! Well think this is all I have to say for this time so until I write again all the Best and "Cheerio", Love Les
This was the last letter received from my Uncle to my Mother (his sister), he was shot by a sniper on 2 May 1945 in a town called Kroppelshagen a few miles from Hamburg and is buried in Olsdorf Cemetery, Hamburg
