I left for my war service on 4th Nov 鈥39 and I came home in Nov 鈥44.
That day coming home I thought that I would have seen some of the regiment but I saw only one of them, Rory Galloway, at Stranraer. We met Hughy Gallagher from the Navy as well and we were the only three in the train carriage. We had to get a train into Larne to York Road in Belfast, and then from York Road to Limavady and then you had to change a Limavady junction to get a connection into Limavady station. But when we got to the junction all you could hear was 鈥渂ang bang bang!鈥 from the rails. They had put something on the rails; I don鈥檛 know the name for them but as the wheels went over them they made a bang. The railway men had put them on themselves because they thought the whole section was coming home. We arrived at Limavady station and it was packed with people. Streamers and everything but there was only two of us who stepped out from our section. Hughy stepped out too but he was in the Navy. But they were expecting all our section home.
The boys had all written home you see, saying that they were coming home. This was a Friday when we arrived and on the Monday they all arrived themselves and I was at the station to meet them.
I went away a young man but I came back an old one, both in mind and body.
