When I was at Heinemann publishers in Lower Kingswood we had the Royal Engineers in who took over the building to make maps in time for D day. I am still in touch with many old school friends from the war days. My dad went up to Rutland working on gliders which they used to go over to drop the men into enemy territory. We had a youth club at Danetree Road and as the boys became 18 they were all called up. We lost a lot of schooling because we had to go into the shelters so often. My husband wasn't de-mobbed until 1946 and we were married in 1947.
