Mr Belcher was stationed in the frigate HMS Loch Glendhu. In March 1945 the U1024 was attacked and brought to the surface. "My action station was on the gunnery transmitter in the wheelhouse. We heard some exciting noises and I asked a bosuns mate to open the sliding door so we could see what was going on. As he did so a German was climbing out of the fore hatch of the Uboat and turned the gun on us and I was looking straight down the barrel. Luckily the seaman manning the twin oerlikon machine guns on that side saw what was happening and took appropriate action and I was spared to live another day. He enjoyed my rum ration was some time afterwards."
