This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer on behalf of George and has been added to this site with his permission. George fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

Whilst held on a 'charge' and being transferred from Gibraltar to Algeria on a Corvette, three asdic 'blips' came up on the ship's computer screen followed by a further two asdic 'blips'. There was some confusion, as we were just one of three Corvettes (approximately 700 tonnes per ship) travelling on the sea. There should only have been two 'blips'. We fired a set of veries fire to light up the sky to see a submarine transparent under the seawaters. The other 'ship' happened to be a 2000 tonne German submarine. As soon as the submarine had seen the Corvettes, she submerged. We searched for the U boat and subsequently did quite a bit of 'depth charging' hoping to sink her, but to no avail and she rose to the surface. We pursued this exercise for approximately 10 hours but decided to give up, as were were unsucessful in destroying her. The submarine must have mistaken us for more powerful destroyers, as she did not attempt to destroy us in return.
