Ray was a young lad during the War. I was nine and I remember the table shelter that had been made using a 6ft by 4ft solid top with a mattress underneath it was used as a stage for the VE concert.
They were bolted together and they made a good concert stage for the VE day party. We had jelly, custard, cakes and watched the entertainment in the stage of tap dancing which sounded wonderful on a metal stage. People played squeeze boxes and piano accordions, slate and clapperboards. Hitler was hung on the lampposts and at the end of it all I went to sleep. As lads we had bombsites to play on and we burnt railway sleepers on bonfire night. We were keen collectors of wartime souvenirs despite the danger they posed to us.
