- Near to joining the Forces — didn’t get around to it.
- At the beginning of the War was 14, - Coombe Barbaras — making hand grenades from 8.00 a.m until late — not dangerous — 8/9 d a week.
Talked about the Air Raid shelters. The noise was so frightening and, as someone said, it nearly killed more people than the actual bombs.
The problem with the shelters was that there was always a joker — yet we sometimes found them annoying.
The older the person — the more scared they were — the young ones just laughed and ran about.
Regarding Rationing: he remembered seeing a banana for the first time and he thought it was so strange.
He really loved chocolate, especially Cadburys — but didn’t get much. For some reason the older ladies got first choice in the stores for the chocolate with rationing books.
