During the build up to VE Day there was great excitement in Gill St and the surrounding streets in Charlestown. Our fathers, brothers, sons and husbands were one by one returning home, to a hero鈥檚 welcome. Bunting and flags criss crossed the streets and everyone was waiting for their families to be reunited with their loved ones. The cheers went up as the lads in full military regalia marched proudly down the streets into the arms of their families. Everyone was singing and dancing and round the doors of the returning lads, a large 鈥淲elcome home John鈥 etc was displayed with the union jack.
Every street had a communal street party on VE Day. I was 7 years old at the time and for weeks our mothers had prepared for this most wonderful day by sorting out food and games for young and old to enjoy. Everyone was so happy that at long last the war was over, for most of us but not forgetting in the Far East our lads were still at war with Japan and that our troops would return safely too.
