I volunteered for the Navy at the age of 17.I saw action in the North Sea, the Far East Russia, Norway, and the Mediterranean. There were long periods of monotony and boredom. We also visited Australia and Ceylon. I was on submarine duty and made some good chums, but of course were all scattered after the war.

I remember a muntions ship being blown up in Bootle Docks, destroying the dock in May 1941. My nephew was born nearby on the 1st May and his mother dropped him in fright when she heard the blast, which rocked the entire area.
