We lived on a farm in rural Northumberland, and had little contact with evacuees; in fact we hardly knew the war was on sometimes. Food was never a problem — we kept pigs, and the supply of bacon meant we never went hungry, as we cured them. The was a couple of German POW’s who worked on the farm, and they were very nice and friendly — one even went to the trouble of making a dolls house with incredible detail for my daughter, with electricity and tiny figures which really endeared me to him. (Even though we werent allowed to talk to them) What was funny about the German POW’s was that when boxing day came, they actually thought that the dance being held was a boxing match!
