I was 5 when war was declared. I lived in Wallasey, on Merseyside with my parents. When the raids started we used to go into our Anderson Shelter in the garden. We had bunks in there and my parents and my brother and I used to try to sleep in there. On one occasion I had whooping cough so my mother said we should stay in the house and sit under the stairs during the raid. We heard many bombs falling, getting nearer then there was a very loud explosion and the place shook. My father tried to open the door into the hall but it would not open. He kept on pushing and found that the grandfather clock had fallen down with the blast. He eventually pushed it open enough to allow us out. The windows had all been blown out and the ceilings were down. There was a terrible smell of soot and plaster and we had difficulty getting out of the house. We had to go to the local Church for shelter and a few days later I was evacuated to Shropshire for three years.
