After we got back from Singapore in April 1940 we lived thirty miles from Aberdeen. Father was away; the only men in the village were elderly and there were lots of young mothers and children.
My mother couldn`t boil an egg; at first we had some help, but gradually the three women were called up so she had to learn. We had lots of power cuts and she had to wrestle with the big range. It was very cold and I remember her going down to the coal yard where the office was in a caravan to beg for some more fuel whch cost 5/- a ton!
We could get food in the country; We kept chickens; offal wasn`t rationed and I remember one day we had a sheep`s head. Very strange to me. There was always plenty of oatmeal and honey so we ate a lot of porridge. Aboyne Castle Gardens nearby had fruit for sale so we got extra sugar and had lots of jam. We cycled everywhere.
