My Grandma owned a greengrocers shop and my Mum and I lived with them over the shop whilst my Dad was in the RAF. Gran had a friend whose son came home on leave and brought some bananas with him. One of these was presented to "Baby Pat" (me, aged about 21/2) as a very special treat. On the same day a very persistent customer was demanding bananas when I walked into the shop and between mouthfuls of this precious gift assured her "No 'nanas today lady, no 'nanas today." Exit one very DIS-satisfied customer!!
Aged 11 in 1953 Iwas the only child in the class who had seen or tasted a banana.
