Before the D-Day landings I was in Sicily with my wife, I was given orders that my wife had better go home as we were due to be very busy and I would only get distracted. We were put onto an American Troop carrier ship and I didn鈥檛 have a clue where we were going. It came over the tannoy that our unit would be off loaded, so we took our vehicles off.
Two or three days later my kernel told me the carrier had been bombed by the Germans, a lucky escape.
