I grew up in Bemerton where I lived with my parents, brother and many sisters. During the war there were good things and bad. I had an American boyfriend and we loved going to dances in the NAAFI and in the American Club, in the building that is now Woolworth鈥檚 in the High Street. I worked as a telegraphic operator and used to have to type the telegraphic messages informing the 鈥渘ext of kin鈥 when someone was missing or killed in action. I used to feel very sorry for the young telegraph boys who had to deliver these messages.
