It was about october 1939 and I was sent to the Duke of YORKS HQ in Kings road chealsea with about 200 other youngsters who could not be sent overseas due to fact that we were under 18.
so it was decided that we went for a route march every morning fore cexercise. and fist morning with a 2nd leutenant at our front we took of and made our way over albert bridge ,
the column got onto the bridge and we all fell over in a heap, in those days no other traffic was abouit . we had not broken step.the march carried on through Battersea Park
These daily marches were great fun unless we had 2nd leuit Cortez Lea ,a cocky young officer at the healm.
from here I was sent to Paddington poltechnic for a while for written exams on radio and electrical engineering.
Congratulations they said ,you have come out third in this intake.
so at 18 i got my first sripe at st. johns wood barracks Ordnance Hill
