This story has been added to the People鈥檚 War website by Micheline Stevens on behalf of Shirley Dossett. Shirley has given her permission and understands the sites terms and conditions.

'In 1944 I was evacuated from London (Brentford) to Wheatly, Yorkshire. The night we got there we had to sleep in a school on mattresses on the floor. The next morning families chose children and my sister, aged nine, and I , aged five, stayed together, we went to school and used to have our tea there, although I don't know why. We had marmite sandwiches which we hated so my sister buried them in the snow. When the snow melted the sandwiches were still there. I hate marmite to this day.'
