'In 1944 I was evacuated from London (Brentford) to Wheatly, Yorkshire. The night we got there we had to sleep in a school on mattresses on the floor. The next morning families chose children and my sister, aged nine, and I , aged five, stayed together, we went to school and used to have our tea there, although I don't know why. We had marmite sandwiches which we hated so my sister buried them in the snow. When the snow melted the sandwiches were still there. I hate marmite to this day.'
