WE WERE RUDELY AWAKENED ONE NIGHT IN THE EARLY PART OF THE WAR, THERE WAS QUITE AN UPROAR IN THE STREET OUTSIDE, WE HEARED SOUNDS OF FALLING DEBRIS, AND STRANGE GRATING NOISES, I REMEMBER MUM SAYING "THEIR HERE MY SON, THEIR HERE" I WAS JUST A THIRTEEN YEAR OLD, AND SHE WAS VERY FRIGHTENED,WE REALLY DID THINK THE GERMANS HAD COME.
ON OPENING THE FRONT DOOR AND PEERING OUTSIDE, A LOUD VOICE BOOMED OUT
"KEEP IN, KEEP IN"...... A BARRAGE BALLOON HAD BROKEN FREE FROM IT'S MOORING, AND THE TRAILING CABLE ATTACHED TO IT WAS KNOCKING THE CHIMNEY POTS AND SLATES OFF THE ROOF TOPS, IT WAS VERY FRIGHTENING AT THE TIME.
BUT WHAT A RELIEF KNOWING IT WASN'T THE GERMANS AFTER ALL.
I HAVE SINCE NOTED FROM ACCESSING OTHER STORIES ON THIS WW2 WEB SITE, MANY BALLOONS DID BREAK LOOSE, I SUPPOSE WHEN WINDY CONDITIONS PREVAILED, THERE MUST HAVE BEEN QUITE A STRAIN ON THE MOORED CABLE.
ANOTHER TRUE WARTIME MEMORY,
FROM,
TED DANN.
