This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life on behalf of Geoff Baker.
When the enemy planes were returning home they dropped their bombs anywhere including the fields at Brithembottom. One night the enemy planes were being chased by ours and were firing shells at one another. One of the shells went into the wall of the farmhouse at Pond Farm, just above the head of Hazel, who was asleep. As far as I know the shell is still in the wall today!
