My father , Jakob Lewin ( Levin ) , was born in 1918 in Losice , Poland . Losice is a small town located midway between Warsaw and the Soviet border . My father was one of nine children born to Nuska and Alte Lewin . Prior to it's takeover by the Nazis Losice had a Jewish population of 2900 many of whom perished in Treblinka . Only my father , two brothers, and a sister survived . Fleeing the Nazis my father crossed into the Soviet Union , however trying to reenter Poland he was arrested by the NKVD and exiled to a labour camp in the northern Urals - Ukhta . Here he remained for nearly two years until the formation of Anders Army . With Anders Army he escaped the Soviet Union and continue on to Persia ( Iran ) , and Palestine .

- Posted to the Palestine Training Depot . June 11 , 1946 .
- Posted to the Military Dispersal Unit . July 9 , 1946 .
- Discharged September 4 , 1946 .

For his years of service my father was awarded : the 1939-45 Star , the Africa Star , the Italy Star , and the War Medal 1939-45 .
My father sacrificed much and is a true hero .
