I am interested in the Second World War because of the sacrifices my father made fighting against Fascism and the extermination of the Jews in Europe .
My father , Jakob Lewin ( may be written as Levin ) , was born in 1918 in Losice, Poland . It is a small town about thirty minutes east of Siedlce . It's pre-1939 Jewish population of 2900 was all but wiped out by the Nazis - many of whom died in Treblinka . My father lost both parents and five younger sisters .
Just prior to the Nazis taking over my father's hometown , he , along with two brothers and a sister escaped across the border into the Soviet Union . Attempting to reenter Poland he was arrested by the NKVD and exiled to a labour camp in the northern Urals - Ukhta . Here he remained for nearly two years until the formation of Anders Army. With Anders Army he exited the Soviet Union , then Persia ( Iran ) , Palestine , and on to British North Africa .
From 1942-44 my father fought with the British 8th Army ( 1st Camouflage Co. ) at Tobruk and Benghazi . Later when the Jewish/Palestine Brigade was formed he joined it . He saw action in Italy with the Brigade which was attached to the British 8th Army ( 643 Field Co . ) . He also saw action in Holland and Belgium with the British Army of the Rhine .
For his service he was awarded : 1939-45 Star , Africa Star , Italy Star , & the War Medal 1939-45 .
