This story has been contributed by Val Potter of Age Concern. It was originally contributed to Age Concern in 1990.
Mrs Belt was busy bringing up her four children during the War. She had two daughters and two sons. Her daughter Kathleen, had a bad heart. One year, all the children had measles and then Kathleen had it for a second time followed by pneumonia.
Mrs Belt's husband worked on the railway as a driver and was away long hours. He was often knocked up in the early hours to be told "You're on!" and he had to go, with just an hour to be ready for work.
She had a neighbour, Mrs Frank Clark, and decided to go with her one day to the pictures at Skipton. They went by train, saw the film and went back to the station in the black-out. The train came, no announcement, they got on, and finished up at Morecambe! having missed Hellifield in the dark. They were accommodated in the waiting room overnight and rang Mrs Belt's husband to stop him going to work so that he could look after the children. They caught the first train home in the morning but were not very popular!
