'I was seven when the war started. We were on holiday with grandma in Dover when war was declared so we got on a train and went back to Maidstone. Dad ran a pub in Maidstone and I can remember all nationalities of soldiers. We stayed in Maidstone throughout the war and 1 can remember the gas works being bombed and Maidstone Bridge, the main route to London, being bombed. The night London really burned the sky was red.Dad was too old to go in the services so he joined the Fire Service and mum carried on running the pub.'
