My lasting Memory of World War II is…in December 1940 aged 5, walking in the night to the sound of heavy aircraft, searchlights and my Mum sat on the end of the bed. My brother, Mum and Dad went to the underground shelter at Hodgkinsons Iron Foundry in West High Street. Whilst there was the most enormous bang, louder than any other. Mum held us close bending over us for protection. Puffs of cement came out of the walls. The smell of damp cement still brings back that memory. Emerged next morning — two houses opposite had taken a direct hit and we had to climb over debris and burning beams leaning against the Co-op wall at the corner of Denbigh Street. As a result of the night my Brother and I were evacuated but that’s another story…
