This is an extract from a recording of Mrs Robbie Lovett made at the Hythe Library Reminiscence session on 26/08/03.
It was transcribed by Linda Franko, a CSV volunteer, and added to the site with Mrs Lovett's permission. The interviewee fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
Tell you something, you鈥檝e triggered something off:
When my call-up papers came there was a train waiting at King鈥檚 cross to take us to Gloucester. One big train for all the hundreds of girls that were going, being called up, I was one of them. Mother and my young sister came to see me off and the dog, Bob. It was a bit tearful but I put on a brave face, a few tears were held back. I kissed the dog goodbye and that kind of thing. My mum! I will never forget it, as the train puffed out slowly, she ran after the train a little way and do you know what she said to me?
鈥淣ow don鈥檛 forget, no strange men鈥
I mean! I was going to see hundreds of them, wasn鈥檛 I? Poor mummy, she was so upset. She wrote and told me鈥 that Bobby had died and she says that she鈥檚 pleased in a way because she couldn鈥檛 get the food for him. Also she says he used to tremble from head to foot when he heard the warnings going up. So I went to the loo, (big brave Airforce girl,) sat on the loo and cried my eyes out.
