Hello: We hosted a series of Reminiscence/People's War Website taster sessions at libraries in Folkestone & district.
The main aim of these sessions was to stimulate reminiscence and to encourage people to write down their memories.
Not all contributors were able to register for the website but many hand wrote their memories or typed them on to a word processor & saved them on floppy disk.
With the consent of these contributors, staff from the Folkestone Heritage team transferred stories to this special group account for Shepway Stories
For Further Information ring the Folkestone Heritage Room on 01303 256710
The People's War Pilot Project gave the Folkestone Heritage team a chance to experiment with Reminiscence activities in library settings.
The experiences of staff, volunteers & participants was positive.
However, if Libraries or other organisations are considering holding Reminiscence programmes they should be informed by the good practice of experienced organisations such as the
Oral History Society
http://www.oralhistory.org.uk/
and
Age Exchange
http://www.age-exchange.org.uk/
These organisations can offer advice and training and highlight professional issues in the fields of oral history & reminiscence work.
