I was nearly 5 when war broke out.
I remember the soldiers marching up and down the street - they were billeted in the big houses in Seahouses and North Sunderland.
There were a lot of Australians billeted at Seahouses during the war.
I remember a terrible explosion one lunchtime, and we ran up to the stack yard to see what had happened, it had been a boat hit a mine. When we went back to our dinners they were covered with soot.
There was german plane came down in a field at Spring Hill farm. They bombed the railway between Seahouses and Chathill - it was thought they had been bombing the Tyne and had some bombs left. They didn't hit the railway but the bombs went off in the fields - I remember my dad telling me about it.

The Italian prisioners used to make rings out of shillings, and I remember a game they made with a table tennis bat and string with pecking chickens on. They worked on the farm with my dad, and so did my mam.
