At the age of 11 in 1939 I was living in Lancashire : when the evacuee process took place, I was sent to collect the forms to register myself from the local school.
On the way home from the school I lost the form whilst visiting a travelling fair, when I arrived home my parents were furious and sent me to bed without supper. I went back the following day to collect a new form but the forms had all gone and had been allocated to evacuees who were destined for a boat trip to Canada for the duration of the war. Some days later, we heard on the radio that the boatload of evacuees has sunk with a great loss of life.
My father decided that this was a sign, and that I was not meant to be an evacuee and therefore kept me at home for the duration of the War, and safe from the perils of the journey.
