Memories of Madley Mr Storey
I joined the Air Cadets in 1941 and got called up 2 years later. I was sent to Madley in 1943 to train as a wireless operator. I was 18 and a half. Madeley was a bit different to Islington where I had grown up.
We flew Domini aircraft which we called , Flying Classrooms. There was room for six trainees, one instructor and the pilot
We used Marconi Radios coded 1154 for the transmitter and 1155 for the receiver. We flew all around the local area and Wales.
In Jan 1944 we went on a 6 weeks course to Whitley Bay near Newcastle. It was over Christmas but we were made very welcome there.
Later on we were shipped out to Egypt March 1945 to train as air gunners. I became a WOP/AG (Wireless operator Air Gunner ) This was training for the offensive against Japan. We were all geared up to go, when America bombed Hiroshima and so we didn鈥檛 have to go. Some of us were disappointed.
I then went to the biggest transport depot in the Middle East Command, north of Cairo and became a driver. This kept me busy until the end of the war
