The spring of 1942 was a desperate situation for the country following Dunkirk .I was based ar RAF Brancote at the time , and all of the fields in the South and East of England had large poles dug in to stop planes and gliders from landing .

At RAF Brancote we took desperate action , the fitters in the machine shop having to cut four foot lengths of one inch diameter galvanised water pipe and then welding into it a 1914 rifle bayonet .

We in the joiners shop had to fix battons onto all the walls in all offices , cookhouse , canteen and hangers for everyone to put them in . You had to carry them at all times of day and night , and if caught without one , you were put on charge - four hours of drill on the square !

When I was drafted overseas from RAF Brancote , I was only given five rounds of rifle shooting to get me ready for overseas action !

Message 1 - Spring of 1942

... " was a desperate time immediately after Dunkirk ..."
sorry but I thought that May/June of 1940 was an even more desperate time for the whole of Britain as that was the time of Dunkirk and our backs really were to the wall.... not that the Spring of 1942 was much better as we were then having a heck of a time with Rommel in the Western Desert, but hope was springing eternal and it was in the October 1942 that the tide finally turned and we had our first great victory at the third Battle of El Alameim, by the British 8th Army commanded by Lt.Gen Bernard Law Montgomery ! This was indeed the turning point of the war followed a few months later by the Russian Victory at Stalingrad. This should not be forgotten as there are too many people to-day trying to revise History for their own ends that we should perhaps do a little bit of checking for the facts. MR Hill probably thinks he is correct in his statements but a little research can put us all on the same side of the facts !
